We continue on our journey through the world of the nuraghi, and come upon yet another monument. This is Nuraghe Nolza: a structure consisting of a central keep surrounded by four smaller towers linked by curtain walls.
Archaeology is a very popular subject in Sardinia. The press, TV, politicians, men of culture, laypeople, all seem not only interested, but also well-versed on the subject.
Il nuraghe è situato su un ripiano basaltico, alle pendici del Monte Manai, in posizione dominante sulla piana di Abbasanta. La struttura, costruita con blocchi di basalto appena sbozzati e disposti a file orizzontali regolari, è di tipo complessa.
The area which hosts the nuraghe Scerì was inhabited from Neolithic times, as shown by two ‘domus de janas’, chamber tombs cut into two erratic granite boulders: their exploration has brought to light, among other things, the head of a small female idol.
Nuraghe Serbissi, which we are about to visit, is a three-towered nuraghe set on a limestone spur known as “Su Taccu”, from which our gaze ranges into the far distance.
The wide range of building types found in the complex of S’Ortali ’e su Monte, in the countryside of Tortolì, bears witness to the very long human presence in the area: they include a nuraghe with two rings of walls, a village, a giants’ grave, three menhirs and an underground tomb.
The cult of the waters is one of the hallmarks of nuraghic civilisation. Springs and wells were held to be sacred, and striking temple structures were built around them.
We make our way through the lush Mediterranean maquis which still surrounds this site: one of the island’s best-known and most evocative nuraghic sacred areas. A true village-sanctuary, a catalyst of the sacred energy so deeply felt by this ancient civilisation.
Along the way leading to the sanctuary of Su Romanzesu, we cross a beautiful cork tree grove which protects the sacred area, one of the most important and imposing on the whole island.
Our daily lives are punctuated by a variety of moments. The regular activities in which we engage determine the meaning of our time. The spiritual and the material dimensions often struggle for supremacy in our search for a meaningful life.
